Older Corfiots will remember the lady in the picture. Her name was Maria (I never knew her last name), but the whole island called her Lucinda.

Maria was a woman with mental and physical difficulties. She stood out because of her eccentric dress sense. I remember she liked to dress as a sailor, and every afternoon, she would dress and put on heavy makeup, matching her bright clothing. She had some difficulty in walking.

There wasn’t a single islander who didn’t tease her as she walked by, usually quite unpleasantly.

The cafe “Evropi” on the Liston (Esplanade), was where teachers tended to congregate and socialise, my father among them. One afternoon, Maria was walking past, and one of the other teachers called out to her and started teasing her mercilessly. Soon the others copied him, and she looked miserable. She tried to answer back, but her voice was drowned out by the laughter.

My father suddenly stood up and I saw him taking his strict expression, normally reserved for the classroom. “Leave Kyria* Maria alone you fools!” he said. Silence fell, and then a trembling voice was heard: “He called me Kyria…”  and her eyes filled with tears.

May she be well wherever she is….

*”Kyria” is a title of respect, the equivalent of “Madam” or “Signora”.

Oh, I miss her immensely. She was so much a part of my children’s youth. She was such an interesting character and always most gracious and polite and so interested in the children. I used to stop to chat with her about this and that most days and I am so sad she is no longer with us as she added colour, spice and wisdom to our lives. Bless you, Lucinda, I miss you greatly. xx
